Wonder Wednesday 12-29-10

Off topic, but first up, for anyone who isn't my friend on FB, here is the highly anticipated (by me anyway) DJ Earworm year end United States of Pop mashup, entitled Don't Stop The Pop. I believe this is the fourth one of these he's done and they are all genius! He takes Billboard's listing of the Top 25 songs of the year and mashes them all up into one song! I have been anxiously awaiting this year's edition for weeks now and it has finally arrived and is beyond worth the wait! It blew away every expectation I had! Part of that has to do with this being one of the poppiest, danciest years in pop music in a while, with multiple contributions from Usher, Taio Cruz, Katy Perry and others. But I actually think it's the neatest when he mixes in non-dancy songs like Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" and Train's "Hey Soul Sister." Check it out!

It's amazing all the way through, but I think my favorite parts come toward the end. I love the mashup of Alicia Keyes and Katy Perry "From New York... to California" and I think my absolute favorite is Katy singing, "No regrets..." followed by Bruno Mars, "There's not a thing that I would change..." Just brilliant! I've been listening to it on repeat! You can download it from DJ Earworm's site, and check out his other genius mashups, including all his previous United States of Pops.

The new Teen Tit... ahem, I mean Young Justice series is set to launch on 1-7 and Cartoon Network has released a new 7 minute promo.

I am so excited for this series! The first episode was exquisite and this clip looks equally amazing! The clip features Robin, Aqualad and Kid Flash trying to convince Speedy to join them. I think that's a nice homage to the fact that these are the four classic teen sidekicks.
And the "trinity" at the center of this team are the three first teen sidekicks to join forces, even though this Aqualad isn't the same.
As previously discussed, Wonder Girl wasn't a real unique character and was only added to the Teen Titans as a mistake and Superboy and Miss Martian are both relatively recent creations. But I'm sure ALL the characters will be given their time in the spotlight. This show is too good and I haven't been this excited about a series in a loooooong time!

I'm still watching GI Joe Renegades and it's grown on me. It's a completely new take on GI Joe with nothing to do with any previous incarnation. In the newest episode, there was a lovely homage to the 80s series...
The voices of Duke's parents were provided by the original Duke and Scarlett! (I don't know the actors' names, shame!) Scarlett's voice was immediately recognizable. She has this unmistakable slight rasp in her voice. Duke's was slightly harder to recognize, but I'm sure it was him and what a neat little nod to the series that really launched this long-spanning franchise!

So... at least I have some TV goodness to look forward to in the new year!

Tune In Tuesday - Titans Edition

So lots of Titanic TV news, today. First The CW announced that their next new super hero themed series was going to be Raven, based on the member of the Teen Titans. It's an announcement completely out of left field, as Raven has rarely ever starred in anything solo. She formed the New Teen Titans in 1980 and has been a fixture on the team since.
It's an obscure choice BUT thinking about it, a teenage heroine who is the daughter of a human mother and demon father, who must suppress her emotions to prevent her demon daddy from using her as a vessel to destroy the world... it sounds like the perfect match for The CW!
In the comics, Raven has very subtle abilities. She is an empath, so she can read others' emotions, she can manipulate emotions to a degree and she can teleport. Recently, she appears to have developed the power of flight. I'm not sure if they'll try and beef up her abilities on the show the way they did on the Teen Titans cartoon, on which she basically had telekinesis. For such a gothy, introverted character, I never dug how they gave her bare legs on the toon. I guess it was in homage to the slitted skirt she wore in the beginning, but it felt too InYaFace to me. Then again, I'm sure on the show, she probably won't even wear a real costume. We'll see... but I think this has potential. As startling as the decision was, it's a logical choice, so let's hope it works. I'm just thrilled to get a FEMALE based super hero project out there!

In other Titans TV news, last week, Cartoon Network aired a sneak preview of Young Justice... and it was EXCELLENT!The Young Justice comic was basically the 90s version of Teen Titans, just with a different name, starring the then-current "sidekicks" of the Justice League heroes... Robin (Tim Drake), Superboy (Kon-El/Conner Kent), Wonder Girl (Cassie Sandsmark), Impulse (Bart Allen) and Arrowette (Cissie King-Jones), plus a few made-for-the-series characters like Secret (a ghost of a deceased young girl) and Empress (a magical warrior... and sigh, token ethnic character). Eventually the YJ book was canceled and the four stars, Robin, SB, Impulse (adopting the new codename Kid Flash) and Wonder Girl "graduated" to a revival of the Teen Titans book. The show is kind of a mixture of that series and the original/current Teen Titans. It appears that Robin and Kid Flash, as well as guest star Speedy (Green Arrow's sidekick, whose name is used in a hilarious one-liner at the beginning) are the originals from the 60s-80s, Dick Grayson, Wally West and Roy Harper, not the current versions. Yet also in the mix are the modern Superboy, Miss Martian and the newly introduced Aqualad, Jackson Hyde. Not appearing in the preview was Artemis, a female archer who it's been leaked is Arrowette from the 90s Young Justice series. So... it's kind of a hodgepodge.
Arrowette... Artemis has been the subject of a lot of speculation and debate, because the creators wouldn't reveal who she actually was. There are two blond teen archers in DC Comics. Arrowette, as I said, was in YJ in the 90s, but retired.
More recently, Green Arrow took on a new Speedy, Mia Dearden (the original, Roy Harper had adopted the identity of Arsenal, then later Red Arrow). She served with the Teen Titans, but hasn't been as big a part of the DC Universe as some of her contemporaries. There actually is a character in the DCU named Artemis, a red headed Amazon who for a time served as Wonder Woman. The absence of Wonder Girl in the cartoon's lineup led many to assume that THIS Artemis was being used in her place. But why ditch the red hair?

One clever guess I heard was that it was this character, The Tigress, real name Artemis Crock, the daughter of two old Green Lantern foes, The Sports Master and The Huntress. She originally functioned as simply Artemis and she uses a crossbow, so that lends the theory credibility.

But Cartoon Network leaked that Artemis was Cissie King (guess she dropped the hyphenate). Here's the punny part... Her name is Cissie KING. Green Arrow's real name is Oliver QUEEN! Get it?! In the first episode, GA is still partnered with the original Speedy, Roy Harper, so no one's sure how Cissie will factor in.
I gotta say, I L-O-V-E-D this episode! The animation is gorgeous, the characters are all interestingly rendered (Robin is much smaller and skinnier than the others, Aquaman and Aqualad are given barefeet for the first time, which makes perfect sense, etc.) The story was action packed, serious... yet still fun and had a nice amount of character development. Of course some assholes will criticize anything so...
OF COURSE people are bitching that Aqualad is black. Suck it up! they went to the trouble of introducing him in the comics before the series began and he's AWESOME, so suck it up. He's super strong and can create weapons out of hard water. He is the biggest ass kicker in the bunch! Viva Aqualad!
I can't argue with the critique that the first episode was an epic sausage fest. It basically followed Robin, Kid Flash and Aqualad on their first mission as a group, which involved finding Superboy. However, my defense, and I'm sticking to it, is that it was an homage to the very first teen sidekick crossover that preceded the actual formation of the Teen Titans.
See same characters, just... in the 60s.
At least Miss Martian showed up at the end. On this series, she's Martian Manhunter's niece. In the comics, she's a White Martian (the evil kind) but is good so she disguises herself as a Green (good) Martian. She shows up at the very end and all the guys try to mack on her. It's cute. This episode was SO good, I'm willing to not judge it on lack of female content, because I know when the young ladies show up, they'll be handled properly. (One of the producers worked on the EXCELLENT X-Men Evolution series which featured stellar female characters!)

For some reason, Wonder Girl wasn't available to the producers in the beginning, but she has since been made available and I can't wait. Since it's a mixture of older and newer characters, I don't know if the Wonder Girl they pick will be the modern one, Cassie Sandsmark...
Or MY GIRL, Donna Troy...
I'd love to see Donna animated, but I'd actually be happy either way.
Did I mention that Robin is voiced by the ABORBZ Jesse McCartney? Soooooo KEWT!!!
Also, back to the treatment of women in cartoons, if it offends you that female characters factored lightly into YJ, DON'T FUCKIN' WATCH GI JOE RENEGADES!!! Scarlet is featured heavily, but she is the highest ranking of the Joes and is constantly talked down to, dismissed, made fun of and in EVER conceivable way treated like shit!!! It's the most misogynist 30 minutes of toonage I have ever seen! I can't believe NO ONE ELSE, as far as I could tell from reading message boards and such, has complained! Are women just not watching this show? Well... DON'T! (Although, I have watched episodes since and they weren't that bad. Oh well, just venting!)

Weekend Extra Super Hero Costumes - Part 2 Marvel Girls

Welcome to Part 2! This time, I am focusing on the ladies of Marvel Comics... and the indie comics gals, because I didn't know what else to do with them. Also $5 to anyone who can even tell me who the indie characters are. Yeah, thought so.

1. This Isn't Catwoman Part 1
The Black Cat, aka Felicia Hardy is Marvel's blatant rip-off of Catwoman. She's a cat burglar who has a love/hate relationship with Spider-Man. The stitching on the Halloween costume even evokes that on Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman costume in the 1992 flick Batman Returns. So yeah, have fun explaining to everyone all night long that you're not dressed as Catwoman.

2. This Isn't Catwoman Part 2

This is the Black Widow, as personified by Scarlett Johansen in Iron Man 2. Once again, have fun explaining to everyone all night long that you're not dressed as Catwoman. Making her belt and wrist gauntlets gold would have helped, at least!

3. Captain America

Another feminized version of a male hero, but it's cute. Shiny is always good. The mask is clever, invoking both the A on his forehead and the wings on the sides of his cowl, without actually being a sweaty, constricting cowl. The two best parts, though, I'm pretty sure are NOT included when you buy the costume, the life-sized shield and the shiny metallic boots. Still, cute and a tad extra geeky as Cap isn't the biggest name hero out there.

4. Emma Frost
The X-Men's resident exhibitionist... this is like the mutant equivalent of Slave Leia. Any girl that wears this? Ho. There, I said it.
For some strange reason, there's a PG rated teen version available, but it looks nothing like the character's costume and no one would ever in a million years be able to tell what this costume was supposed to be OF, so fail. Also, teen girls don't read X-Men comics! And any one that does and chooses to wear this costume? Ho. There, I said it again!

5. Green Hornet

I'm guessing that the Seth Rogan movie was supposed to have been out by now. Sucks to be whoever made this costume and was hoping to cash in on it. Also, sucks because this is the UGLIEST slutty costume ever! That mask is atrocious! And the dress part? FRUMP!

6. Iron Man
Yeah that Iron Man armor is the most asexual, least attractive garment on any super hero, so good luck translating that to a sassy Halloween costume for a lady! They did what they could, but I don't think I'd ever guess what this model was supposed to be dressed as. That, sadly, appears to be a trend. It's appropriately shiny, but so was Captain America's and Robin's, so it loses some points there. I mean, you can't argue that it should be more boxy and clunky, can you? It was a challenge from the onset and they tried. What else is there to say?

7. Hit Girl

Hit Girl was the best part of Kick-Ass and this gives more realistic geek gals a flattering alternative to the hooker stylings of the majority of comic themed costumes. The top looks too baggy and ill-fitting through. But at least you won't catch pneumonia in it.

8. Phoenix

It's cute. It's fun. It's geeky. Not much to complain about. Like I said before, I understand switching out tights for a skirt. Also, like I mentioned with the Captain America outfit, I doubt the boots are included, so good luck there. (Although, Hustler probably has them.) I do like the way they extended the fire bird logo's wings to the shoulders. It actually looks better than on the original costume! The patch of black along the neckline is a nice homage to the original, but I actually could have done without it. (I guess it looks a tad tacked-on.)
Particularly interesting, I feel that the Halloween costume also recalls Jean Grey's Marvel Girl costume from the 60s. So it's like a bridge between her two looks. On the other hand... does anyone even like Jean Grey? Anyone? Didn't think so.

9. Scarlett

Um... fail. I mean, I get that she's supposed to be dressed as Scarlett from the GI Joe movie, but a plain, nondescript camo jumpsuit? It better come with a name tag because, no one is going to know what you're supposed to be! (This coming from a kid who was Dr. Strange one year!)

10. Spider-Man
Cute. The cut plus the "cat eye" mask give it a 50s throwback look. Also doing the mask that way is nice way to adapt Spider-Man's mask without restricting one's vision. If this is too conservative for you, it also comes in this skankier variation.Yikes! Besides being a lot more revealing, this one looks poorly made. If it was on Project Runway, the designer would be in the bottom three. Auf wiedersehen!Ahhhhh... happy medium! More revealing than the first, but less so than the second. I think it's cute! The way they work in the red webbing on the top actually resembles the way it looks on Spider-Man's costume.

If you're feeling darker, there are also as many versions of Spider-Man's costume in black.
This one resembles the first, but for whatever reason the translation just doesn't come through. If you glance, she just looks like a business woman in a mask.
This one is more like the black costume worn by Spider-Man in the comics with the large silver/white logo. This actually strikes me as the sluttiest costume I've shown so far, though.
Another one?! I guess the spider web accents are a cute idea, but this is also fairly trampy. With both of these, maybe it's that the black fabric translates to rubber/latex which = dominatrix. Er... or is that just me.
I find it odd that all of the female Spider costumes are adaptations of Spider-MAN'S and no one has attempted to adapt the actual Spider-WOMAN'S costume. It's super sexy and eye-catching. And I mean... hell, Emma Frost and Jean Grey got costumes! Get on the ball, Marvel!
It's a stretch, but you could say the black costumes are inspired by the second Spider-Woman, but... we all know they weren't!
I don't know what the hell inspired this! It's like Spider-Man as interpreted by Hannah Montana! Like Marvel goes to the Mall! Yuck! Just... yuck!
NOT better! Like the first black costume, you don't even get that this is supposed to BE a Spider-Man costume! It's just a black mall rat costume with webbing on it!
Oh for cryin' out loud! I mentioned this in my DC post, the idea of reinterpreting a super hero suit in pink for girlie girls, but with that frilly tutu... just freakin' dress as a ballerina! Why bother with the Spider pretense?!

11. Storm For that one black comic nerd girl out there. At least she doesn't have to dress as Catwoman. And at least this isn't that frumptacular costume Halle Berry (her again) wore in the X-Men movies. (Which buycostumes.com had listed as "The Storm." I found that humorous!) This is cute and accurate... but it's also boring. Storm's very first costume is her most iconic, but it's also basically a bikini and a cape. This variation on her modern costume works, but... yeah, just lacks pizazz. And the headdress looks kinda lame. Then again, it's the most distinctive thing about the whole affair, so I guess leave it alone.

12. Wolverine
Last one! Hasn't this been fun? This one ranks up there with the Robin costume! I love it! It's such a great adaptation of the actual costume Logan wears in the comics to a feminine style. The mask, like with Spider-Man, evoke the pointy flared mask he wears. The stripes/claw marks on the bodice actually look exactly as they do in the comics, I LOVE the red stripe across the neckline and on the belt and the best part, for me anyway, the shoulder straps flare out, just like the fins he wears on his shoulders! There COULD have been some embellishment on the skirt, but with such an ornate top, I guess they had to scale back somewhere. And the mini-gloves with claws are super cute!

So there ya have it. A journey through this year's selection of trampy geeky Halloween costumes! Now... what to wear, what to wear...?
