Artist Bill Walko has done some really nifty images. Check out his Deviantart page. He's got quite a few really nice Teen Titans illustrations and I was DELIGHTED to see his take on The Power Squad, the aborted all-female super team that I discussed here.

How Can I Not Care And Still Be Completely P.O.'d At The Same Time

Two "big" comic-related stories popped up last week, but they were things I was kinda apathetic about.
First, over in Marvel's "Ultimate" Universe, they recently killed off Spider-Man. They are relaunching the Ultimate comics and will introduce a new successor to Peter Parker, Miles Morales a teenager who happens to be half black, half Latino. Huh. Okay, well, they replaced Ted Kord as the Blue Beetle with a Latino teen and that actually went well. I mean... I don't read the Ultimate books anymore, so what's it matter to me? Sounds like a good idea, though and Spider-Man is about as big a name as they come, so to have him embodied by an ethnic character is pretty bold, if you ask me. Along the lines of having AA female Monica Rambeau go by the name Captain Marvel, but even moreso!
Second, they revealed that Lawrence Fishburn would portray Perry White in the upcoming Superman: The Man of Steel movie. My reaction? Well, heck, Lawrence Fishburn kicks ASS! That's perfect casting! But that movie is so far off that I'm not getting myself worked up over it just yet. But anyway, that's a good choice, right?

Oh fuckin' WRONG! I started reading comments online and it was the skuzziest, most racist shit you could imagine! I was stunned, appalled and ashamed! Ashamed because I am a dyed-in-the-wool NERD! I am DORK to the core and I associate myself with that culture... only to find that these "peers" I align myself with, this culture I feel a part of, consists of such bigoted idiots! I've always tried to brush it off as more of an exclusionary thing. I've always said that hetero white males feel that if a protagonist isn't also a hetero white male and they don't read that character's books or see their movies or whatever, it isn't that they're racist, it's they feel that the character isn't like them, therefore feel that they won't "get" the character or they feel that the book (or movie or whatever) isn't FOR them, it's for individuals that are superficially like the character. But, nope! Turns out fanboys are just racist assholes.
Not even the old school, sheet-wearing, sister-fucking kind where they're just FLAT OUT EVIL. These are people that INSIST they aren't racist at all. They're "traditionalist." "Spider-Man has always been white! This is just PC garbage!" Peter Parker has always been white. The REAL Peter Parker still is. In Ultimate comics, though, Peter Parker is all kindza DEAD! This is a new character. Why does his successor have to be YET ANOTHER Caucasian teen hero? We have a shit ton of them already, 75% of which are in the Legion of Super Heroes. Fuck that! We need another white teen in tights like we need another fucking Green Lantern. What the fuck is everyone's problem?! I don't even get why people are pissed. This isn't Peter Parker! This isn't the REAL Marvel Universe! Why does it always have to be about YOU, white people?!

And who gives a fuck about Perry White?! I can't believe that people are bitching about that when in Iron Man, they turned Caucasian butler Jarvis into a fucking COMPUTER and no one said shit about that! A computer isn't even HUMAN! So what does that say?! White fanboys are okay with characters being dehumanized, but NOT being a different sort of human that is probably more athletic and can dance better than them?! Such ridiculous bullshit! GAH!

Also, it's 2011. Who the fuck is still racist? Are people even still doing that anymore?! Jesus, I know comic fans aren't that hip, but that backwards shit went out with fedoras and cocktails at lunch. (Okay those two things are welcome back in style, but not RACISM!)

I LOVE Joe Phillips' style! If I could draw LIKE anyone, he is my pick. He doesn't do a lot of actual comic work. Usually, he does these awesome gay themed illustrations that are published in books or calenders and lots of merchandising.It's like hot and cute at the same time. One thing he does really well is capture age. He draws clear adults or younger characters. Not every illustrator does that. But anyway, enjoy!












This one's my favorite. It's so hot! Although I think Beast should be bigger. Ice Man looks like a young Ben McKenzie and ain't nuthin' wrong with that! Also Angel seems to be the least endowed and when I think about it... that sounds about right. Ha ha!

SuperMANic Monday

BAM! DAT AZZ!!!

Ha ha ha! I was on a message board and they showed these two pics and I was like, "Damn, gimme some warning before flinging Spider-Azz in my face! I need to be prepared for that!" I wonder if that's really Andrew Garfield, because hell that's the next-best-thing to seeing it naked! If not, 'twouldn't be the first time I was tricked by Spider-Man's ass.

But the main subject of today's blog is the newly announced star of the upcoming Superman reboot that I am already convinced I will not enjoy, Henry Cavill.He was on The Tudors, which I never saw. I've never seen him in anything, actually, but I do recall that his name has come up before as a potential Superman. Well... he's easy on the eyes at least!
Gotta say, it looks like his body hair ratio is about perfect. Yep, definitely easy on the eyes.

It could work... the reason I say I won't enjoy it is because I'm the one comic fan that doesn't like Christopher Nolan's Batman reboots. But... most of that has to do with the casting. I just am NEVER going to like Christian Bale in anything. And everyone knows I actually couldn't stand Heath Ledger's Joker. So hopefully, Henry Cavill can deliver where they didn't. We'll see, I suppose!

Wonder Wednesday - Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man

Of course the comic fans hate it. They hate everything!
I love Emma Stone! I didn't love Easy A, but I still like her overall... usually. I hate the fake blonde hair. No one ever looks good with fake blonde hair, ahem Xtina. Double ahem, Lindsay.
And Andrew Garfield is goddamn delicious! He is so freakin' good looking, it's ridiculous! The Social Network is a good movie, but the whole time, I just kept wishing I was having a threesome with him and Jessie Eisenberg. And then another one with Armie Hammer X2. Wait... how did I get here... um... something about Spider-Man...
Some are upset that he's too skinny.But Spider-Man is SUPPOSED to be skinny. He didn't beef up until years later, when John Romita Jr started drawing him.And even today, a lot of illustrators tend to go back to that early, skinny look as the definitive interpretation.
And then there are the "Why did they have to make him all Emo?" haters. Um... because all Peter Parker does is fail at life and lie around (usually shirtless) moping and whining about it! He was Emo before Emo existed! It's his whole shtick! Honestly, I don't understand comic fans... what do they want? A super cool, badass Spider-Man? Because that's NOT what Spider-Man is. He's a loser who never has any luck at anything... that's why I THOUGHT people liked him!

But let's talk about that costume. First of all... HAWT! Buuuut, second, what's up with the racing stripes? I don't really dig them on the legs and I REALLY don't like them on the arms in place of the traditional broad stripes. The stripes go up his legs and make a little point at the waist, but they don't connect to the red V pattern on the front, in other words, it doesn't have a "belt" like the traditional costume does. But, I get it. Tobey Maguire's costume was a 100% faithful adaptation of the comic book costume on the silver screen. Probably THE most faithful of every movie super heroes' costume. But this is a fresh start and they needed to differentiate this look from the past movie cycle's. People are complaining about the "shoes" but no one is sure if those will be visible in the actual movie. I mean... he has to have something! He can't run around in his socks! That makes my feet hurt just thinking about it!

I guess what I'm saying is, it's close enough. It's not like they changed his signature color scheme or stuck him in armor or S&M leather (unlike certain super heroes...). It's the essence of Spider-Man, just tweaked a tad. I don't get what the fuss is about.

Wonder Wednesday -Thor Trailer and Marvel Goes Tron

So the second official Thor trailer has been released:

And it looks faboosh! But even with all the special effects and fighting and ornate sets and costumes, my one "OH SHIT!!! I GOTSTA SEE THAT!!!" moment was this:
HO-LEEE HELL!!! I could make all kindsa hammer jokes right now, but they wouldn't be jokes! I literally gasped OUT LOUD! Talk about a Thunder GOD!!!

I keep forgetting that Disney bought Marvel a while ago. But in one of the first real synergistic endeavors between the two, they're doing a Marvel/Tron crossover in the comics to promote the new Tron movie.

Okay, first up, I don't think I've ever actually seen the original Tron, but I always had the impression that it was BAD. Am I wrong? I do remember seeing The Black Hole and that was two hours of my childhood I'll never get back and that was some valuable chrono-real estate to just piss away like that. I thought Tron was like that, expensive, flashy effects squandered on a terrible movie. I figured that's why they never made another one, nor did anyone else make a similar knock off. Am I wrong?

I LOVE this!!! I think they should make it her permanent costume! I mean her real costume is a CLASSIC and I will always love it, but practically speaking, it is very revealing. This maintains the flavor of her classic uniform, but covers her up and gives her a modern, sleek makeover! I uh... don't get the ventilated crotch, though.
