Throwback Thursday 11-18-10 Age of Spider-Woman

So I was browsing for some Christmas presents or at least ideas for presents, and I wound up purchasing two things off eBay.
Spider-Woman Mad Libs! (For me.) And...
This cute Spider-Woman iron-on patch! (For me.) Okay, FAIL!
I think Spider-Woman is my favorite underdog in comics. Aquaman may be seen by many as an underdog (well, underdogfish!) but I think he has a huge number of fans. Spider-Woman, not so much and it's no small wonder. She's really never been handled well. I hate her current comic. She always had so much potential! She was the most licensed female Marvel hero during the late 70s-early 80s, but her book was so... I don't want to say the book was bad per se, but it was kind of inaccessible. She lived in San Francisco, whereas the bulk of the rest of the Marvel heroes lived in NYC and her stories had an atmospheric, supernatural vibe. I think she'd have been more successful if they'd just let her be a normal super heroine! I mean, look how cool and happy she looks in the pic above! Her books never had that feeling.
I was strong and held off on buying these rawk sunglasses. But... I mean, I'll probably buy them tomorrow. I tried looking up vintage Spider-Woman collectibles (which I know are plentiful), but was foiled by the fact that a company called Sideshow Collectibles has produced some recent Spider-Woman merch, so that's what came up in my Google. I know of a couple of blogs devoted to Spider-Man and Marvel vintage merchandising, but they don't use tabs, so I'd have to scroll through the entire thing to find any Spider-Woman items they featured. But anyway, here is a sampling of some items I found.
Another iron-on patch!
Trix Cereal premium sticker!
Button! (En Espanol!)
Rub-A-Tattoo (whatever that is)! (With Gum!)Activity Book! (I LOVE these! And coloring books! This one has Rebuses!)Underoos!
Thermal Underoos! (Did not knows those existed!)
Halloween costume! (Too bad she and Dazzler didn't warrant an appearance on the box! Oh yeah. There was a DAZZLER!)

Wonder Wednesday EXTRA 11-17-10 Record Scratch, Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp!

Jigga whaaaaaaaaaa....?! Batgirl is BACK!!!

11-17-10 Wonder Wednesday - Gotta Be Green!

Is there any way I can spend today's blog discussing anything BUT the Green Lantern trailer? Nah, didn't think so.

Well now, I'll be honest with you. The trailer's not really enough to sway me too far one way or another. I mean, trailers are SUPPOSED to look great. How many times have you watched what you thought looked like a killer trailer only to see the movie and feel like a pile of cinematic dog feces just got smooshed all over your face? The GL trailer looks good, but I'm remaining cautious. Being the sucka I am, the whole thing kicks off with Ryan Reynolds in his tighty whities, so right off the bat, I'm like, "Okay, you have my attention." Many take issue with his Ryan Reynoldsiness... he's cocky and smart aleky and a lot of people don't consider Hal Jordan to be either of those things, to which I say, re-read some good GL stories, including Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier. Hal's a hot shot test pilot. He needs a certain swagger. Think of Maverick in Top Gun. Plus, there's a lot more riding on this film than just a Green Lantern franchise. The future of DC's movie prospects are counting on this movie crossing over Iron Man style. I could be wrong, as I don't have mainstream taste, but I think Iron Man's success largely rested on the likeability of RDJ in the role. (Then again, maybe people just like watching dudes clunk around in armor, blowin' shit up.) Green Lantern can't come across as some rigid tight-ass. People have to LIKE him and to some degree, want to be him.
The whole thing caps off with Hal transforming into GL. People are bitching about the suit, because it's CG and maybe looks "off." I'm all on board simply because it isn't foam rubber armor. See how easy it is to make me happy? And, the transformation reminds me of Fire-Star's on Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends. I'm sure whoever came up with it, would love to hear that comparison. Now some people are like, "Well, I wasn't sure about him, but the scenes of him acting unsure and showing some hesitance convinced me." Well... that was my least favorite part of the whole thing. I don't consider Hal all that angsty and don't think we need to get all emo to make him more relatable. He's not Spider-Man or one of the emo X-Men, all misunderstood and outcast. Let's keep the "super" in "Super hero," shall we? Also...
FUCKIN' SINESTRO!!!

Here's one no one else'll get. In the footnotes of The New Frontier, Darwyn Cooke mentions that in his depiction, Hal doesn't find his predecessor Abin Sur in a crashed spaceship, as has always been depicted in GL's origin. His explanation, "Why would a Green Lantern be in a space ship? They never use spaceships. They can fly across the universe with their rings." It was like a light being turned on. "Ohhhhh. That's true. That DOESN'T make sense!" In the actual book (and the animated adaptation) it's so subtle, you really wouldn't catch it without the note. I wish maybe it had been more overt, because now, seeing the movie trailer and the fact that they stuck with the crashed spaceship, I'm like, "Man, I wish they hadn't done that!"

Anyway, I do have a couple of non-GL topics. First, there's a gay nerd site called FanboysoftheUniverse.com. They cover comics, movies and TV shows, as they said on In Living Color, "From a male point of view." Following up my assessment of The Walking Dead yesterday, I was delighted to find that I wasn't the only one with that opinion. This is their take:
"Is it a bad sign that with only three episodes of The Walking Dead left to go, I’ve kind of lost interest? I’ve been trying to articulate why I don’t care anymore, and here’s what I’ve come up with. I like Rick. And only Rick. I know it’s probably unrealistic to have a show about one guy against the zombies. It’s a little too Will Smith. But it was so much more fascinating seeing him struggle with the new world and interact with one or two humans here and there. I was hoping for a rich character study, but instead I got a standard assortment of stereotypes. Plus, it’s the end of the world as we know it, so why not have a threesome? Lori has the perfect opportunity to invite hunky Shane to join her and Rick in their love tent. I know Shane’s pissed off that Rick’s back from the dead, but I bet he’d be willing to give him a reach-around, just to keep things friendly. I haven’t read the comics, so I don’t know, maybe that happens in season two?"

This was their take on last week's Glee: (Yeah, I know Glee isn't really genre... but it's really gay, so...)
"Oh Glee, if only you would just hurry up and either blossom into the amazing show I know you could be, or permanently succumb to all your worst tendencies and settle for being popular, but awful. At least if you chose the latter, I could finally give up on you in good conscience. As it is, the only thing you’re consistent at is being the most frustrating viewing experience currently on television."

Spot-on, in both cases, if you ask me! As for Glee, last night's episode was so FUCKING bad, it makes me not ever want to watch it again! I was tempted to just turn it off halfway through! It was chew your leg off bad! There was not one good element in the whole thing! The return of Terri, everyone's least favorite character? I did notice that Jessalyn Gilsig's name continued appearing among the series regulars this season, even though I think this was her first appearance. I guess this was their goodbye to her, so I guess that's nicer than just having her disappear inexplicably and never return. Except... I mean, that's kinda what they'd already done and no one really cared.

I had just said to Cathy that they needed to do a Mercedes-centered episode... THIS ISN'T WHAT I MEANT!!! Holy shit!!! This was the WORST SUBPLOT EVER... not just ever in Glee history, but in the history of storytelling!!! Anyway, I guess Mercedes has had her spotlight, so get in the back of the crowd and pop up to wail on the end of songs and sing lead every fourth episode again. Fuck that!

Also, last week, I though, "Well maybe they can still redeem Karofsky. He's just acting out out of fear and frustration and self-loathing." Then this week happened and... uh, nevermind. No redeeming that guy.

And Kurt and Blaine's budding relationship swerved right into annoying territory. These two have ZERO chemistry. (A recurring problem on this show, ahem Quinn & Sam!) And they act more like girlfriends. I'm ready for this storyline to be over. ALREADY! (This just reminded me of poor Mercedes' subplot and made me sad!)

Let me veer back into the Nerdiverse to wrap things up. In case you missed it, some OFFICIAL pics have been released from the DIZZAZZTER that will be the Spider-Man Broadway musical Turn Off The Dark... and you thought those douchy U2 songs were bad enough! Check this shit out! Why don't they give up?! The forces of the universe have done everything in their power to tell them to FUCKING NOT MAKE THIS!!! No money, every star attached has quit, two stuntment have been injured, cursed them with douchy U2 songs... is someone going to have to get decapitated to get the message through?! The universe does not want your SHITTY Spider-Man musical!!! STOP MAKING IT!!!

Tune In Tuesday 11-16-10 FALL TV Season Indeed

Undercovers has been cancelled because America doesn't care about black people. As with Lonestar, I liked this show. I think they were both well done all around. Undercovers, I thought, tread in that Chuck area, so I'd have thought fans of that show would have enjoyed this one, if they hadn't been such racist scumbags. Am I just kidding? Hmmmm?

Once I know a show has been cancelled, I just stop watching it. I did the same with Pushing Daisies. I've still never seen the last three episodes and I L-O-V-E-D that show! If you think I love Glee, Glee ain't shit next to Pushing Daisies! That show was flawless! And still I stopped... maybe I just don't want to face the conclusion. Like if I don't watch the ending, it's still going on. Who knows?

So yeah, once I read Undercovers was cancelled, even though there are several more episodes set to air, I just stopped DVRing it. This has been a dismal new season. I realized like four weeks ago that Hawaii Five-O, despite it's splashy production values was actually terrible, so I tuned out on that. I think that makes for ZERO new shows I'm still following. Well, except...

Okay, so... I conferred with Cathy and... wait for it... we both kinda don't like it. The first one was moody... which, let's cut the bullshit, kinda equals boring. The second was good. The third was just S-T-U-P-I-D! WHY would they even CONSIDER going back into the city to save that racist piece of shit?! That makes ZERO sense! Fuck that guy! P!L!U!S! HE'S NOT EVEN A REAL CHARACTER! There are like a half-dozen made-for-TV characters hogging up screen time, the two dipshit racists, the wife-beater (in the book, Carol is single), the new token ethnic characters meant to fill space until the AMAZING ethnic characters from the comics show up (and let's hope they DO show up!)... and then the preview for the next episode... I was like, "Oh. So... I guess this show is just inspired by the book."
Hold on, hold on! I'm not off board just yet! But seriously, they need to wrap up this bullshit Rescue-The-Scum-Sucking-Racist subplot and get on with the gettin' on! Previously, we were speculating that this season(ette... six episodes really isn't a REAL season) was going to end with "the prison" (no spoilers!) but at this rate, we'll be lucky if they manage to make it to the "gated community." Hell, at this rate, they may wind up in Paris! HILTON!!!
Cathy took issue with the twins being missing, but I can live without them, Sure their story has a HUGE pay off, up until that point, they're just dead weight and... I dunno, I don't care about kids on shows like this. Now Carl, Carl I like! He's appropriately creepy... not in a bad way, but Carl is odd. I speculate in the books, he'll wind up the last survivor. You've got to have a kid where you can tell there's a lot going on behind those eyes and this kid has that. I did like the frog hunting scene where Shane is acting like a regular "guy" and for the most part, Carl isn't responding, because he's not a regular "guy." He's different. Like!
I dunno... maybe if the original characters weren't carictures. OF COURSE there are the racist rednecks. OF COURSE there's a wfie beater, with a wife who loves him. Couldn't they come up with something fresher?! The book is SO innovative. Why did they saddle the show with stereotypical archetypes?
Also, Andrew Lincoln (Rick) does the shittiest, fakest Southern accent ever.
Maybe if they hadn't made such a fuss over how faithful the TV show would be to the books, I wouldn't be as bothered by the changes. I mean from the start, I knew there would be changes, but these don't seem to be changes as much as an all-new story line that has nothing to do with the source. But, I mean... I'm totally still going to watch it!

W.T. Friday?! 11-12-10 Wonder Woman (and Superman) Dramz!

So after much hype, DC has plucked superstar (yet inconsistent) writer J. Michael Strazynski off of both the maligned relaunched Wonder Woman and chronically delayed "Grounded" (aka Superman Walks Across America) run of Superman. Well that went well. Both are huge snafus for DC. The mainstream media gave tons of coverage to the Wonder Woman revamp, mostly because of her costume change that everyone hated. The Superman storyline was a big deal around here because Cincinnati was one of the stops in the story. (The other big stop was the long ass three month delay in getting that issue out, wah waaaaaah!)

This is a weird situation, because both books are mid-story. They've already announced that the next issue of Wonder Woman is a fill-in catalog story, meaning it's set back in "normal" time, with Wonder Woman being the same one we've all grown up with, in her classic costume, with no reference to the changes Strazynski wrought. (This cute image from DC Women Kicking Ass!)
So then what? Does someone else then have to come on board and try and figure out how to wrap up these storylines? I guess so. Hopefully they can do so quickly, because no one likes them and everyone wants things back to normal.
Lest you think this is all motivated from Strazynski failing on these books, that isn't actually the truth. What actually happened is that he scored HUGE with Superman: Earth One, a one-shot graphic novel that presented a modernized origin of Superman. Like with the Wonder Woman costume change, major media covered this book due to what they perceived as Superman's reinvention into an Edward Cullen-esque sulky teen character, possibly to appeal to that Twihard audience.
He actually does adopt the classic suit in the story, but this incarnation of Superman is an outsider, thus the hoodie in the promo shots. It's almost like the story would be if they made a new Superman movie and it was a retelling of his origin again. (Which hopefully the new movie they ARE making will not be... does anyone NOT already know the origin of Superman?)

Anyway, with all the media coverage, PLUS the fact that this book was carried in all major book sellers (online and brick & mortar) it was a smash hit. Probably more than they'd even expected as Amazon is SOLD OUT! DC has since made an announcement that they will be reorganizing it's direct marketing system (i.e. traditional comic book stores). They are starting to realize that publishing monthly comics just for 35 year old fan boys that you can only buy at specialty shops isn't really the way to go and it looks like they are going to start pushing for more mass market product, both in print and in other media.

I think even I'm starting to outgrow the monthly floppies. I so much prefer to get an entire storyline in one chunk and read the whole thing in one sitting. The main problem with that is that they tend to hold off on collecting the really big storylines for several months after they end and then, when they do publish them, they do an expensive hardcover first and then months later, the more affordable paperback. (It's just like they do with real books... I understand it, but it's still annoying as a consumer.) That means some storylines aren't published in paperback until like a YEAR later! There are several series that I ONLY read as trades, though, The Walking Dead and Fables, in particular. It's harder with mainstream super hero fare, because there's so much coverage of them that the storylines are more likely to get spoiled for me by the time the collections come out.

Of course, I COULD buy the hardcovers (and have on occasion) a LOT cheaper from Amazon, but is that really how we want to do this? Put all the independently owned comic shops, that have kept the art form alive this long, through the ROUGH 90s and in today's recession, out of business? Poor form!

Anyway... DC Women Kicking Ass also posted these images by DC illustrator Oliver Nome for redesigns of Wonder Woman's costume.
My first reaction was that I didn't like it because it didn't address the complaints that critics had of the classic suit, no straps to hold up her bodice, almost the same amount of exposed skin, high heels... high heeled thigh-high hooker boots at that! Buuuuuut... I kinda DO like it despite all that! Love the chunkier, more protective tiara! It's exactly how I would have done it! The neck covering is nonsensical, although I like that it adds a splash of color. It could easily be reworked to cover more. I'd extend it to the top of WW logo. That takes care of the "straps" issue. I'd probably give it a sleeveless/tank top cut on the sides. I don't think she necessarily needs sleeves, but that armored WW has to weigh a ton and there really is no explanation as to how she keeps it up! The bodice itself looks great. The addition of the navy on the sides is a minor, simple change but adds a lot! The trunks upon first glance seem as revealing as her classic star-spangled ones, but upon closer inspection that isn't the case. The red portion looks to be cut about as skimpy as those were, BUT with the navy square-cut portion, it's a lot more modest and concealing. It reminds me of the shorts that Serena Williams wears when she's playing tennis and since super hero costumes have always been inspired by athletic wear, fashion plate Serena is a perfect inspiration for super heroine costumes. If she can wear those outfits while playing tennis, then realistically a super heroine could do the same while chasing criminals and climbing walls.

The addition to the navy "gloves" is once again a simple change, but adds some visual interest. They always seem to give female heroines fingerless gloves, which doesn't make much sense. Are covered-up fingers a turn off or something? With Wonder Woman, I think gloves would make sense since she uses a lasso. I mean, cowboys wear them for the same reason. Eh.

And then... the hooker boots. The thing is... I like them! I like the design. I actually may be the only one who finds the classic red WW boots with the white stripe to be a tad unrealistic and slightly too garish. Once again, the addition of navy is a small, simple change that adds a LOT! Plus Nome worked in stars, which are such a classic Wonder Woman costume element, but are missing from the trunks in this redesign. So overall... I may not 100% love it with all my heart, but it's a really nice effort.
I wish this image (and the next one) were in color, because that would add a lot. The tiara appears the same as the first one, so I like that. I like the top, with the straps and shoulder pads. Both logical additions. I'm not sure I like the chain mail midsection. Overall, the bodice appears over-designed. It could use some simplifying... keep in mind, someone has to draw this costume over and over, page after page. I do like the beefed up gauntlets. The belt and trunks are okay. I'm not sure about the star right over her wonderment. I prefer the square-cut trunks in the first design to these, which are skimpier. I don't love these boots. But with the boots and the top, they might look better in color.
Finally, this version addresses the age-old critique of Wonder Woman's costume being too revealing. I wonder, though, if fans can accept a more covered up WW. The neck strap in the middle is an interesting choice, but it needs tweaking. It's a tad hookery for me. The chest logo is TOO simplified. It neither resembles a WW nor an eagle. It's more like a V and that makes no sense. The boots with laces... it would seem that it would be really hard to move ones' legs in those. They're dominatrix-y but Wonder Woman's original comics from the 40s were rife with bondage and domination, so it works as a nod to that. But they seem too fussy and once again, someone has to draw all those laces over and over in each comic book. This look overall is the simplest and the one that looks most like "clothes" with the leather belt and not a large metal one which WW traditionally wears. As such, it bears the closest resemblance to the actual costume she's wearing in the comics now... which I guess isn't much of a compliment.

Elements from the first and second could be worked together nicely into a great finished look. I don't know that I'd necessarily take anything from the third. However, like with the second, seeing it in color would help a lot.
BONUS! He also crafted this redesign for Vixen! Vixen is a model, so the edginess works for her. It's very Rihanna/Mary J! I like the tribal necklace. I like the edginess and hardware on the top, but the closure needs to be more secure. She's a very physical heroine and her tittays would fly out five minutes into a fight! (Not that her current plunging V-neck, strapless top is any more logical.) I'm not sure about the leather straps on the one arm. That seems like it would take a half hour to put on! The gloves are good. The leggings and boots also work for me. With only the minor-est of tweaks, I'd love to see Mari sporting this costume in the comics. (Actually, right now, I'd just love to see her IN a comic! Ahem!)

Throwback Thursday 11-11-10 The Darkness

OMG! Remember The Darkness?! I freakin' loved them, but kinda forgot about them. It's funny... yesterday when I wrote my blog about Shazam, the pages I was going to to get info and pics kept also pulling up the band Foxy Shazam, who I guess are kinda like The Darkness. So anyway, I click click clicked and started reminiscing about one of the sweetest, most off-the-wall, most under rated bands of the last ten years! I mean... they were a living Spinal Tap! Just so ironic and silly and deliciously over-the-top (Hello, low-cut catsuits!)! Well, dig in!

MAN! What was your favorite part? Scrawny fug lead singer Justin Hawkins hopping out of the bath to get toweled off by a giant Muppet? Him hurling the giant boulder at the enormous space crab? The inexplicable Devil Woman? Me? I like the Velveetastic thumbs up at the end. But wait! Did you think the saga was over? Hell no! Check out their follow up video, "Friday Night" which picks up where "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" ends!

Okay, so your favorite part of that one HAD to have been "With yoooooooouuuuu.... oooooooooh.... ooooooooh.... ooh hoo hoo.... Reow!"

Next up is "Growing On Me," which is the beautiful story of how a Pterodactyl fucks a spaceship, which then lays four eggs from which hatch... The Darkness! Oh and this song is about GENITAL WARTS!!!

That pink catsuit he's wearing at the end RULEZ! I'd kill for a less-revealing outfit made of the same material! (Unless you think I could pull off... no! Nope! Nevermind!)

And finally, alas, my favorite song from their album wasn't released as a single, so all we have is this live version. Still... pretty ass-kicking!

Muthafuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucka!
